About Cesar Cedeno

César Cedeño Encarnación signed with the Houston Astros as a 16-year-old free agent out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1967, and debuted in the majors on June 20, 1970, batting .310 that year to finish fourth in NL Rookie of the Year voting. He quickly became one of the game's most complete players, pairing power and blazing speed with Gold Glove center-field defense. From 1972 through 1974 he became just the second player, after Lou Brock, to reach 20 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season, and remains the only man to do it three years running. He hit .320 in both 1972 and 1973, led the league in doubles twice, and drove in 102 runs in 1974, the season captured on this 1975 Topps card. Cedeño won five straight Gold Gloves (1972-76) and made four All-Star teams, later helping the 1980 Astros to their first postseason berth. He retired with 2,087 hits, 199 home runs, and 550 stolen bases across 17 seasons, and was inducted into the Houston Astros Hall of Fame in 2020.
