About Jim Sundberg
Jim Sundberg's 1975 Topps card (#567) is his rookie issue, catching him fresh off a debut season that saw him leap from Double-A ball straight to an All-Star Game roster spot. Born May 18, 1951, in Galesburg, Illinois, and signed out of the University of Iowa, Sundberg debuted for the Texas Rangers on April 4, 1974, at 22, then was picked as a reserve All-Star and finished fourth in Rookie of the Year voting. His defense set him apart for the rest of the decade: an AL-record 155 games caught in 1975, and six consecutive Gold Gloves from 1976 to 1981 — the first won by any Ranger. Teammates called him "Sunny," a shortened riff on his surname that also fit his even-keeled nature. Traded to Milwaukee for the 1984 season (his third All-Star nod) and then to Kansas City, he scored the winning run in Game 6 and drove in four runs in Game 7 of the 1985 ALCS as the Royals rolled to a World Series title. He retired in 1989 having played 1,962 career games, then moved into the Rangers' broadcast booth and front office; Texas inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 2003.
