About Dale Murray
Dale Murray's 1975 Topps card (#568) is his rookie card, capturing the Montreal Expos reliever just as he was emerging as one of the National League's top relief arms. Drafted by Montreal in the eighteenth round of the 1970 draft out of Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, Murray reached the majors in July 1974 and was untouchable down the stretch, posting a 1.03 ERA with 10 saves in his first half-season. In 1975 he went 15-8 out of the bullpen, leading the last-place Expos in wins, and in 1976 he led the National League with 81 relief appearances. That workload made him valuable enough that Montreal packaged him with All-Star Woodie Fryman to land Tony Pérez and Will McEnaney from the defending World Series champion Reds ahead of 1977. Murray went on to pitch twelve major-league seasons for six clubs — Expos, Reds, Mets, Blue Jays, Yankees, and Rangers — finishing with 53 wins, 60 saves, and a 3.85 ERA before retiring in 1985.
