About Frank White
A Kansas City native who grew up sneaking into Municipal Stadium to watch pro ball, Frank White graduated from Lincoln High School — alma mater of several Negro Leagues Kansas City Monarchs — before signing with the Royals' pioneering Baseball Academy in 1970. He debuted on June 12, 1973, and spent his entire 18-year career at second base for Kansas City, becoming the everyday starter in 1976. A five-time All-Star (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1986), White won eight Gold Gloves between 1977 and 1987, tying Bill Mazeroski for the most ever by a second baseman, and added a 1986 Silver Slugger. He was named MVP of the 1980 ALCS after batting .545 against the Yankees, then helped Kansas City win the 1985 World Series, hitting cleanup in the DH-less Fall Classic — a role only Jackie Robinson had filled before him at the position. White hit for the cycle twice and retired with 2,006 hits; his No. 20 was retired by the Royals in 1995. This 1975 Topps card, his first solo issue, followed his four-player rookie card in the 1974 Topps set.
