About Jim Wynn

Jim Wynn signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 1962 out of Central State University, but Houston claimed him in that winter's first-year draft, and he debuted with the Colt .45s in July 1963. Patrolling center field through Houston's cavernous Astrodome for a decade, the 5-foot-9, 165-pound Wynn earned the nickname "the Toy Cannon" in 1967, coined by Houston Chronicle writer John Wilson after Wynn's power surprised pitchers expecting a light hitter. That season he set a career high with 37 home runs and made his first All-Star team; two years later he led the majors with 148 walks. Traded to the Dodgers for Claude Osteen in December 1973, Wynn delivered his finest all-around year in 1974 — 32 homers, a career-best 108 RBI, a fifth-place MVP finish and the Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year award — while helping Los Angeles win the pennant and reach the World Series against Oakland, making his second and third All-Star teams in both his Dodgers seasons. He finished his 15-year career with 291 home runs. His 1975 Topps card carries the flag marking that 1974 All-Star selection.
