1975 Topps #571 Dave Lemanczyk

About Dave Lemanczyk
Dave Lemanczyk's 1975 Topps card (#571) is his rookie card, issued while the Syracuse, New York, native worked in and out of Detroit's rotation. A 16th-round pick out of Hartwick College in 1972, the right-hander reached the majors the following April and spent four seasons with the Tigers, going 8-14 in a swingman role. Left unprotected in the 1976 expansion draft, he was claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays and signed his contract before any other player, making him the franchise's first-ever Blue Jay. Lemanczyk anchored Toronto's inaugural 1977 rotation, tying the major-league record for wins by an expansion-team pitcher at 13-16 over a team-high 252 innings. His signature outing came April 24, 1979: a one-hit shutout of the Texas Rangers during a season that made him the first Blue Jays pitcher named to an All-Star team. A back injury soon derailed his career; traded to the California Angels in June 1980, he retired that fall with a 37-63 record, later running a Long Island baseball academy.
