1975 Topps #572 Roger Nelson

About Roger Nelson
Roger Nelson broke in with the Chicago White Sox in September 1967 after four minor-league seasons, then became the headline arm in one of the era's biggest trades: that November, Chicago sent him to Baltimore with Don Buford and Bruce Howard for Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio, Russ Snyder and John Matias. A year later the Royals took the tall right-hander with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1968 expansion draft. Paired with Wally Bunker, Nelson anchored Kansas City's first rotation in 1969, then battled shoulder trouble before a career year in 1972: an 11-6 mark and a 2.08 ERA, fifth-best in the American League, capped by a shutout in the last game ever played at Municipal Stadium. Dealt to Cincinnati for Hal McRae and Wayne Simpson, he was later sold back to the White Sox, the club pictured on this 1975 Topps card, but was released before pitching for them again; he closed his nine-year career with three relief outings for Kansas City in 1976.
