1975 Topps #573 Orlando Pena

About Orlando Pena
Orlando Gregorio Peña Guevara grew up in Victoria de las Tunas, Cuba, working as a butcher in his father's grocery before he was one of just three players signed out of a 287-man Havana tryout run by the Reds in 1955. He reached Cincinnati on August 24, 1958, and won his major-league debut in relief against the Dodgers. Over 14 seasons and eight clubs — Reds, Athletics, Tigers, Indians, Pirates, Orioles, Cardinals and Angels — the right-hander went 56-77 with 40 saves and a 3.71 ERA in 427 games, and was Kansas City's workhorse starter from 1962-65, leading the American League in losses (20) in 1963 and home runs allowed (40) in 1964. Dealt to California for pitcher Rich Hand in September 1974, the 41-year-old Peña entered his 20th spring training on this card admitting he still might sneak in a doctored pitch; he was released on May 5, 1975, ending his major-league career. He later scouted for Detroit, signing Cuban refugee Barbaro Garbey, and was inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
