About Tony Taylor
Antonio Nemesio Taylor Sánchez signed with the New York Giants in 1954 as an eighteen-year-old third baseman from Central Álava, Cuba, then reached the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 1958 as their starting second baseman. A 1960 trade sent him to the Philadelphia Phillies, where a two-time All-Star nod that same season launched a fifteen-year run as the franchise's most durable and popular infielder. Taylor set a Phillies record with 1,003 games at second base and made the diving defensive play that preserved Jim Bunning's 1964 perfect game against the Mets. Dealt to Detroit in 1971, he returned to Philadelphia as a free agent for the 1974 season and, on his 1975 Topps card, wore the Phillies uniform he'd made his own for a decade-plus. He retired in 1976 with 2,007 hits over nineteen seasons, then coached in the organization for years afterward. Cuban teammates called him “Chino,” a nod to his mother's Chinese ancestry.
