About Gene Clines

Eugene Anthony Clines was a fleet, contact-hitting outfielder who broke in with the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 28, 1970, hitting .405 in 31 games as a rookie. A sixth-round pick out of Harry Ells High School in Richmond, California, Clines spent his first five seasons in Pittsburgh, helping the Pirates win four NL East titles from 1970-74 and the 1971 World Series over Baltimore. His best season came in 1972, when he batted .334 with career highs in doubles and triples. On September 1, 1971, Clines batted second and played center field in baseball's first all-minority starting lineup, alongside Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell, doubling and scoring twice in a win over Philadelphia. Traded to the Mets for catcher Duffy Dyer that October, he wore New York's uniform for the 1975 season shown on this card before moving on to Texas and the Cubs. He retired in 1979 with a .277 career average, then coached hitters in the majors for nearly three decades with the Cubs, Astros, Mariners, Brewers, Giants and Dodgers.
