About Lee Richard
Lee Edward "Bee Bee" Richard earned his nickname as a hard-throwing high school pitcher in Louisiana before converting to shortstop at Southern University, where the Chicago White Sox made him the sixth overall pick — and the first shortstop taken — in the 1970 draft. Hall of Fame shortstop Luke Appling watched him work out and predicted, "He's got good hands. He'll be a good one." Richard debuted on Opening Day 1971 as Chicago's starting shortstop and leadoff man, singling twice off Catfish Hunter, but 26 errors in 68 games that year and shaky glove work in the seasons that followed earned him another nickname from broadcaster Harry Caray: "The Juggler." This 1975 Topps card, issued during his final season with the White Sox, capped four years in which he shuttled between shortstop, second, third, and the outfield on speed alone; that December, Chicago traded him to St. Louis, where he opened 1976 at shortstop before Garry Templeton's arrival ended his five-year, .209 career.
