About Lindy McDaniel

Lyndall Dale McDaniel picked up the nickname "Lindy" at age four, a nod to aviator Charles Lindbergh, and it stuck through a 21-year career built almost entirely out of the bullpen. Signed by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1955 as a $50,000 "bonus baby," the Hollis, Oklahoma native skipped the minors for St. Louis's roster, briefly teaming with younger brother Von McDaniel in 1957. Armed with a sharp curve and later a forkball, McDaniel led the National League in saves three times (1959, 1960, 1963). His best year came in 1960: a 12-2 relief mark, 27 saves and a 2.09 ERA brought his only All-Star selection, the first-ever Sporting News NL Fireman of the Year award, and a third-place Cy Young finish — the first reliever to draw a Cy Young vote. He later pitched for the Cubs, Giants and Yankees before closing out his career with Kansas City in 1974-75. McDaniel retired to the ministry, becoming a Church of Christ preacher until his death in 2020.
