About John Morlan
John Glen Morlan, a right-handed pitcher from Ohio University, was Pittsburgh's first-round pick (5th overall) in the January 1969 draft, after passing on earlier offers from the Reds and Indians to stay in school. Pittsburgh signed him as an outfielder, but after two lean minor league seasons at the plate he converted to pitching, a move he'd already tried successfully in college. As an elementary school teacher, he reported to his farm clubs late each year, joining only after the school term ended, until he broke through in 1973, going 11-5 with a 2.09 ERA for Triple-A Charleston under manager Joe Morgan. He debuted with the Pirates on July 20, 1973, going 2-2 with a 3.95 ERA in 10 games, then became Pittsburgh's long reliever for the 1974 NL East champions, working 39 games out of the bullpen. Elbow surgery that offseason ended his major league career at 2-5, 4.16 ERA. His 1975 Topps card, #651, is both his rookie card and his only Topps issue.
