About Dave May

Dave May broke into pro ball in 1962 after the San Francisco Giants signed him for a $15,000 bonus out of William Penn High School in New Castle, Delaware; Baltimore drafted him that December. The left-handed-hitting outfielder debuted with the Orioles in 1967 and was a reserve on their 1969 AL pennant winners, batting twice in that fall's World Series against the Mets. Traded to Milwaukee in 1970, May became an everyday center fielder, capping a breakout 1973 season -- .303, 25 home runs, a league-leading 295 total bases -- with his only All-Star selection. The Brewers dealt him to Atlanta for Hank Aaron on November 2, 1974. His 1975 Topps card, #650, catches him as a Brave in the platoon role he filled that year, batting .276 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs in 82 games -- a career-high .361 on-base percentage. He played two more seasons with Atlanta and Texas before closing out his 12-year career in 1978 with Milwaukee and Pittsburgh.
