About Jack Heidemann

Jack Seale Heidemann was a highly regarded shortstop prospect out of Brenham, Texas, taken 11th overall by the Cleveland Indians in the 1967 draft after leading Brenham High to three straight district titles. He debuted on May 2, 1969, at age 19, and won the Indians' starting shortstop job the following year, with the club raving that he covered as much ground as any shortstop in the league. A concussion suffered in a 1971 outfield collision and inconsistent hitting kept him from holding the job for good, and he finished with a .211 career average over parts of nine seasons. Traded to St. Louis for Luis Alvarado and Ed Crosby in June 1974, Heidemann hit .271 in 47 games for the Cardinals, his best offensive stretch and the season pictured on his 1975 Topps #649 card. He was dealt to the Mets that winter, then closed his career with the Brewers, rooming with future Hall of Famer Robin Yount before losing his roster spot to rookie Paul Molitor in 1978.
