About Jerry Terrell
Jerry Wayne Terrell, born July 13, 1946, in Waseca, Minnesota, grew up in Elysian and starred at Mankato State before the Twins drafted him in the 18th round in 1968. After missing 1969 to military service, he climbed through Auburn, Lynchburg, Charlotte and Tacoma, leading his leagues defensively and helping Charlotte win the 1971 Dixie Association title. Terrell debuted for Minnesota on April 14, 1973; an injury-forced everyday role yielded a .265 average, a place on the Topps All-Rookie Team, and the Twins' Rookie of the Year honor. His 1975 Topps card, #654, carries a back-cartoon misprint reading "Tommy" for "Tommie." A slick-fielding utility man who manned eight of the nine positions -- even pitching once against the Yankees in 1979 -- Terrell played for Minnesota through 1977 and Kansas City through 1980, finishing his career on the Royals' 1980 pennant-winning roster. That year he cast the lone vote against the players' strike and won the Danny Thompson Award for Christian spirit. He later scouted and managed in the minors for three organizations.
