About Rico Carty
Ricardo Adolfo Jacobo Carty signed with the Milwaukee Braves organization in 1959 after his hitting at the Pan American Games in Chicago drew contract offers from eight major-league clubs, all of which he unwittingly signed as an English-limited teenager. Converted from catcher to outfielder in the low minors, he reached the majors in 1963 and anchored the Braves' outfield through 1972, missing all of 1968 to tuberculosis. Nicknamed "Beeg Boy," a name he gave himself, Carty won the 1970 National League batting title at .366 — the majors' best mark since Ted Williams in 1957 — and was voted the first write-in All-Star starter in league history that year, playing alongside Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. His left-field perch in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was known as "Carty's Corner," and his clutch hitting down the stretch helped the Braves capture their first NL West title in 1969. After stops in Texas, Chicago, and Oakland, Cleveland signed him as a designated hitter in August 1974; he rewarded the Indians with a .308 average and 64 RBI in 1975 — the season on this card — then led the club in RBI in both 1976 and 1977, retiring with a .299 career average and 204 home runs.
