About Bill Plummer
Bill Plummer signed with the St. Louis Cardinals out of Shasta College in 1965 and was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 1967 Rule 5 draft, debuting in the majors in 1968. A 1969 trade sent him to the Cincinnati Reds, where three seasons at Triple-A Indianapolis earned him a permanent roster spot in 1972 as Johnny Bench's backup catcher, a role he held through the Big Red Machine's championship run. Limited playing time left him with a .188 career average, but Plummer was a sturdy defensive receiver, widely respected around the league per Sports Illustrated. His most memorable outing came against Hall of Famer Steve Carlton in 1974, when he homered twice in Philadelphia, and he drove in seven runs in a single game at St. Louis in June 1976. Plummer shared in the Reds' back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976 before free agency ended his Cincinnati career in 1978, then managed and coached for two decades, piloting the Seattle Mariners in 1992.
