About Bob Oliver
Robert Lee Oliver signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1963, made a September call-up to the majors in 1965, then spent the rest of the decade in the Pirates' and Twins' farm systems before sticking with the expansion Kansas City Royals in 1969. He made his mark on that first Royals club with a 6-for-6 game against the Angels on May 4 and the franchise's first grand slam, off Jim Bouton in a July 4 doubleheader against the Seattle Pilots. He set career highs in 1970 with 27 home runs, 99 RBIs and 83 runs, drawing MVP support. Oliver followed with productive years for the California Angels, where he moonlighted as a Santa Ana police officer, before Baltimore acquired him for the 1974 stretch run - the trade pictured on this card - and the Yankees purchased his contract that December. He played his final game in July 1975, finishing with 94 home runs and a .256 average over eight seasons. Son Darren Oliver pitched in the majors from 1993 to 2013.
