About Vic Harris

A switch-hitting infielder-outfielder out of Los Angeles Valley College, Victor Lanier Harris was a first-round pick of the Oakland Athletics in the 1970 secondary draft. He debuted with the Texas Rangers in 1972 and opened 0-for-36, a hitless start to a career that still stands as a major-league record. Harris rebounded in 1973, batting .249 with career-best power and speed, and scored the game's first run in Jim Bibby's no-hitter against Oakland that July. That October he and Bill Madlock were traded to the Chicago Cubs for Ferguson Jenkins. Harris opened 1974 as Chicago's second baseman before a knee injury ended his season, then spent 1975 — the year of this card — mostly pinch-hitting, batting .179 in 51 games. St. Louis, San Francisco, and Milwaukee followed before three seasons in Japan with the Kintetsu Buffaloes. A true utilityman, he played six different positions across 579 career games, spending most of his time at second base. Harris died in 2025 at 75.
