About Skip Lockwood

Claude Edward "Skip" Lockwood Jr. was born August 17, 1946, in Roslindale, Boston. Out of Catholic Memorial High School he signed with the Kansas City Athletics in June 1964 as a third baseman for the largest bonus on record at the time, after he personally raised a $35,000 offer to $135,000. He debuted with Kansas City in 1965 but hit just .121 in limited at-bats, and was converted to pitcher in 1968 after Army Reserve duty. Seattle took him in the 1968 expansion draft, and he spent 1969-73 with the Pilots/Brewers, mostly as a starter. Traded to the Angels for 1974 and shifted to relief, he was dealt to the Mets that winter -- his 1975 Topps card still shows him in an Angels cap. In New York from 1975-79 he became a bullpen mainstay, saving 19 and 20 games in 1976-77 and setting a club record with 63 appearances in '77. He closed his twelve-year career with Boston in 1980: 57-97, 3.55 ERA, 829 strikeouts, 68 saves. He later earned degrees from Emerson, Fairfield and MIT.
