About Larry Lintz
Larry Lintz broke into the majors with the Montreal Expos in July 1973, summoned as speed insurance after shortstop Tim Foli broke his jaw. A sixth-round pick out of San Jose State in 1971, Lintz had already shattered the Eastern League stolen-base record with 96 steals in the minors, and 1974 was his best big-league season: 50 stolen bases, a new Expos record that drew comparisons to Maury Wills and Lou Brock. His 1975 Topps card, issued off that breakout year, notes the switch-hitter's knack for beating out infield choppers. Traded to St. Louis in July 1975, then to Oakland that October, Lintz became the latest in owner Charlie Finley's line of designated pinch-running specialists — after Herb Washington and Don Hopkins — playing alongside fellow speedster Matt Alexander in 1976, when he stole 31 bases in just four plate appearances across 68 games. He closed his six-year career with Cleveland in 1978, finishing with 128 steals in 350 games.
