1975 Topps #415 John Hiller

About John Hiller
Toronto-born John Hiller signed with the Tigers in 1962 for $400 a month and a pair of spikes, working through Detroit's farm system before debuting in the majors on September 6, 1965. Converted to relief pitcher, the lefty became a fixture of the 1968 World Series champions, striking out six consecutive batters to open an August game and closing the pennant-winning season with a 2.39 ERA. A heart attack in January 1971 sidelined him for the entire 1971 season, but Hiller returned in 1972 and, in 1973, set the major league single-season saves record with 38 and a 1.44 ERA, earning The Sporting News' Comeback Player of the Year and Fireman of the Year honors. His 1975 Topps card (#415) follows a 1974 season in which he made his only All-Star team and set an AL record with 17 relief wins for a last-place club. Teammates nicknamed him "Ratso," after the limping Dustin Hoffman character in Midnight Cowboy. Hiller spent all 15 of his big-league seasons in Detroit, retiring in 1980 with 125 saves and 1,036 strikeouts, and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985.
