About Manny Mota

Manuel Rafael Mota Gerónimo signed with the New York Giants for a $400 bonus on February 21, 1957, and broke into pro ball that year with the Class D Michigan City White Caps. He debuted with the Giants in 1962, was dealt to Pittsburgh in 1963, and hit .297 over six seasons with the Pirates before Montreal took him in the 1968 expansion draft. A June 1969 trade sent Mota to the Dodgers along with Maury Wills, and Los Angeles turned him into the National League's premier pinch hitter. Mota made the 1973 All-Star team and went on to set the career pinch-hit record with 150, a mark that stood until 2001. Jim Murray of the Los Angeles Times said he "could get wood on a bullet." His 1975 Topps card, #414, catches him mid-career with the Dodgers, for whom he later coached 34 consecutive seasons, a franchise record. Countrymen in the Dominican Republic still call him "El Chory" — Shorty — a nickname his father gave him for playing up against older, bigger kids. Mota finished with a .304 lifetime average over 20 seasons and won two World Series rings as a Dodgers coach, in 1981 and 1988.
