About Marty Pattin
Martin William Pattin, a right-hander out of Charleston, Illinois, pitched 13 big-league seasons for the Angels, Pilots/Brewers, Red Sox, and Royals, finishing 114-109 with a 3.62 ERA and 1,179 strikeouts. A seventh-round pick by the Angels in 1965 out of Eastern Illinois University, he debuted in 1968 and became a franchise footnote the next spring as the only Opening Day starter in Seattle Pilots history. He made his lone All-Star team in 1971 with Milwaukee, then peaked in 1972 with Boston, going a career-best 17-13 and losing a no-hitter to a Reggie Jackson single with one out in the ninth. Dealt to Kansas City for Dick Drago after 1973, Pattin closed out his career with seven years as a Royal, starting and relieving; the Kansas City Star tabbed him the club's Pitcher of the Month twice in 1975, the year of this card, once as a starter and once out of the bullpen. Teammates called him 'Duck' for his uncanny Donald Duck impressions and 'Bulldog' for his mound toughness. He later coached the University of Kansas (1982-87) and died in his hometown in 2018.
