About Bill Hands
William Alfred Hands Jr. broke into pro ball in 1959, signing with the San Francisco Giants out of Fairleigh Dickinson and Ohio Wesleyan, and worked through the system until his 1965 debut in San Francisco. That winter the Giants sent him to the Chicago Cubs with catcher Randy Hundley in a trade for reliever Lindy McDaniel — later ranked among the best deals in franchise history. Over seven seasons in Chicago, Hands anchored a rotation alongside Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins and Ken Holtzman, peaking in 1969 with a 20-14 record, 2.49 ERA, and 300 innings pitched. In 1972 he carried a no-hitter into the ninth against Montreal before Ken Singleton's grounder deflected off his hand for a hit. Teammates nicknamed him "Froggy" — shortened from "Little Froggy" — after his delivery drew comparisons to veteran Don Larsen, known as "Big Froggy." Traded to Minnesota in 1973, he closed his career with Texas in 1974-75, the club pictured on this card, finishing 111-110 with a 3.35 ERA and 1,128 strikeouts.
