About George Mitterwald
George Eugene Mitterwald was born June 7, 1945, in Berkeley, California, and signed with the Minnesota Twins out of Chabot College in Hayward. He debuted on September 15, 1966, and became Minnesota's primary catcher from 1969 through 1973, catching for Billy Martin's division-winning 1969 club and topping out with 16 home runs and a .259 average in 1973. That December the Twins traded him to the Chicago Cubs for Randy Hundley, putting him in Cubs blue for card #411 of the 1975 Topps set. On April 17, 1974, in a Wrigley Field rout of Pittsburgh, Mitterwald hit three home runs -- including the only grand slam of his career -- and drove in eight runs as the Cubs won, 18-9. He caught for Chicago through 1977, closing an 11-year, 887-game career with a .236 average, 76 homers and 301 RBI. He later coached Oakland's and the Yankees' bullpens under Martin and managed in the Athletics' and Twins' systems before leading the independent Duluth-Superior Dukes to the 1997 Northern League title.
