About Mike Cuellar
Miguel Ángel Cuellar Santana signed out of Cuba with the Cincinnati Reds' Havana Sugar Kings affiliate after pitching for a Cuban Army team and throwing a no-hitter that drew scouts. He debuted with the Reds in 1959, but five more minor-league seasons followed before a screwball, picked up in winter ball, revived his career with the St. Louis Cardinals (1964 World Series champions) and Houston Astros, where he made his first All-Star team in 1967. Traded to Baltimore after the 1968 season, the left-hander blossomed into an ace, anchoring three straight AL pennant winners and the 1970 World Series champions, whom he clinched with a Game 5 complete game against Cincinnati. He won 20 or more games four times between 1969 and 1974, and his 23-11, 2.38 ERA 1969 season earned a tie with Denny McLain for the AL Cy Young Award, making him the first Latin American-born Cy Young winner. Nicknamed "Crazy Horse" for a rigid, unbending pregame routine, Cuellar made four All-Star teams (1967, 1970, 1971, 1974) and retired among Baltimore's all-time top five in wins, strikeouts, shutouts and innings. His 1975 Topps card, issued off a 22-10, All-Star 1974 season, misspells his name "Cueller" on the front.
