About Skip Pitlock
Lee Patrick Thomas "Skip" Pitlock was a left-handed pitcher whose herky-jerky windup deceived hitters more than his numbers might suggest. Born November 6, 1947, in Hillside, Illinois, he starred at Southern Illinois University Carbondale before the San Francisco Giants drafted him in the 11th round in 1969. He debuted for the Giants on June 12, 1970, and that August threw a complete-game win over the Dodgers, striking out nine. Traded to the Chicago White Sox in February 1973, he split 1974 between the rotation and bullpen, picking up his only career save against Cleveland that June. His 1975 Topps card, issued as a White Sox pitcher, catches the close of his big-league run: he faced one batter, Billy Williams, that April before being dealt with Stan Bahnsen to Oakland at the June trade deadline. Pitlock finished 8-8 with a 4.53 ERA and 124 strikeouts over three major-league seasons, then pitched one more year in the minors before retiring.
