About Dave Tomlin

Dave Tomlin broke into pro ball as a 29th-round pick by Cincinnati in the 1967 draft out of West Union High School in Ohio, debuting for the Reds in September 1972. Traded with Bobby Tolan to San Diego for Clay Kirby, the left-handed reliever became a Padres bullpen mainstay from 1974 to 1977, posting the best two ERAs of that run, 2.84 and 3.01, in 1976 and 1977 while working a career-high 101.2 innings the latter year. That San Diego stretch is pictured on his 1975 Topps card #578, his recognized rookie card. Cincinnati sent him to Texas for Gaylord Perry after 1978, then bought back his contract that March; Tomlin helped the Reds win NL West titles in 1973 and 1979, pitching in four NLCS games across those pennant runs. He closed a 13-season career with Montreal and Pittsburgh through 1986, finishing 25-12 with a 3.82 ERA in 409 games. Tomlin later spent decades as a minor-league pitching coach and manager, leading the Gulf Coast Red Sox to a 2006 league championship.
