About Frank Robinson

Frank Robinson signed with the Cincinnati Reds out of Oakland's McClymonds High in 1953 and broke in batting .290 with a rookie-record-tying 38 home runs in 1956 to win NL Rookie of the Year. Playing right field for Cincinnati through 1965, he won the 1961 NL MVP award while driving the Reds to the pennant, a season captured on his 1975 Topps "1961 MVPs" card (#199). A blockbuster December 1965 trade sent him to Baltimore, where in 1966 he won the AL Triple Crown and MVP, the only player to win the award in both leagues, then swept the Dodgers in the World Series as Series MVP - that pennant depicted on his "1966 MVPs" card (#204). He helped the Orioles to a second title in 1970 before closing his 21-year career with the Dodgers, Angels, and Cleveland, retiring with 586 home runs, 2,943 hits, and 14 All-Star selections. Known as "the Judge" for presiding over Baltimore's kangaroo court in robe and mop wig, he became baseball's first Black manager in 1975 as Cleveland's player-manager, the same year his final playing card (#580) arrived alongside his managerial debut on the Indians' team card. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1982.
