About Darrel Chaney

Darrel Chaney was a switch-hitting shortstop who spent seven seasons (1969-1975) as a versatile infielder on Cincinnati's Big Red Machine before closing his career with the Atlanta Braves (1976-1979). The Reds selected him in the second round of the 1966 draft out of Morton High School in Hammond, Indiana, and he debuted on April 11, 1969. Eventually passed on the depth chart by Dave Concepción, Chaney settled into a steady utility role, filling in at short, second, and third. He appeared in three World Series with Cincinnati - losses in 1970 and 1972 followed by the 1975 championship over Boston, the same year his card #581 was issued in the Topps set. Traded to Atlanta for outfielder Mike Lum that December, he became the Braves' regular shortstop in 1976 before returning to a reserve role. He retired in 1979 with a .217 average, 14 home runs, and 190 RBIs across 915 games, then moved into Atlanta's broadcast booth alongside Skip Caray and later became a motivational speaker.
