About Eduardo Rodriguez

Eduardo Rodríguez Reyes carried the nickname "Volanta," a family name from Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, first given to his grandfather in 1902 for his loyalty to the Volanta political party. Signed by the Milwaukee Brewers in November 1971 for an estimated $12,000, the right-hander reached the majors about 19 months later, debuting June 20, 1973. This 1975 Topps card catches him mid-career in Milwaukee, where he worked as a swingman and reliever for six seasons (1973-78); that year he went a perfect 7-0 with a 3.49 ERA and seven saves in long relief. He finished his career with the Kansas City Royals in 1979, going 42-36 with 32 saves over seven seasons. His signature moment came earlier: on September 3, 1973, forced to bat after a defensive shuffle erased Milwaukee's DH, he tripled and scored on a wild relay throw — the first hit by any American League pitcher in the DH era, in his only career plate appearance.
