1975 Topps #583 Andy Etchebarren

About Andy Etchebarren
Andrew Auguste Etchebarren, the son of a French mother and a Basque-American father, signed with the Orioles out of La Puente, California, for an $85,000 bonus in 1961 after farm director Harry Dalton scouted him in high school. He debuted on September 26, 1962, catching Dave McNally's two-hit shutout, then broke through as Baltimore's Opening Day starter in 1966, a two-time All-Star (1966-67) who caught every inning of that fall's World Series sweep of the Dodgers and grounded into a double play as the last major-league hitter Sandy Koufax ever faced. That August, Etchebarren pulled a drowning, non-swimming Frank Robinson from a pool during a team party, a rescue as celebrated in Orioles lore as his defense. He won a second championship with the 1970 club and split time behind the plate through 1974, picking up the unwanted nickname "Lurch" from fans who thought he resembled the Addams Family butler. This 1975 Topps card catches him in his final Baltimore season before a June trade sent him to the California Angels, where he played into 1977 ahead of a brief 1978 finish with Milwaukee.
