About Winston Llenas
Winston Enriquillo Llenas Dávila, born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, signed with the Kansas City Athletics in 1961, was released in 1962, and signed with the Los Angeles Angels that December. He debuted August 15, 1968, and spent six seasons with the club (1968-69, 1972-75) as a backup infielder-outfielder, seeing the most time at second base. His signature moment came July 5, 1972, pinch-hitting for Nolan Ryan and lining a walk-off single in a 1-0 win over Milwaukee. In 1973 he led the American League in pinch-hits (16) and pinch-hit at-bats (56), both career highs in a .269 season. His 1975 Topps #597, from his final big-league year, arrived seven seasons after his 1968 debut and is not a rookie card. Nicknamed "Chilote" — as a newborn, a friend of his father called him a "chichilote," Dominican slang for a big baby, and the name stuck after losing a syllable — Llenas became a Dominican Winter League fixture with the Águilas Cibaeñas as manager, general manager, and club president, earning Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame induction in 2008.
