1975 Topps #596 Ollie Brown

About Ollie Brown
Ollie Lee Brown signed with the San Francisco Giants in 1962 and briefly split time as a pitcher and outfielder in the minors, even throwing a no-hitter for Class A Decatur in 1963. A 40-homer, .329 season for Fresno in 1964 — the ballpark's fences pointed toward the city's downtown skyline — earned him the enduring nickname "Downtown" Ollie Brown. San Diego made him the very first pick of the 1968 expansion draft, and he anchored right field for the Padres' inaugural teams, prized for one of the game's strongest throwing arms; his career-best 23 homers and 89 RBIs came in 1970. Stops with Oakland, Milwaukee (the American League's first designated hitter, in 1973), and Houston followed before he landed in Philadelphia, the club pictured on this 1975 card. Platooning with Jay Johnstone, Brown hit a career-high .303 with a .369 on-base percentage that season and reached the postseason with the Phillies in 1976 and 1977, closing a 13-year career with a .265 average and 102 home runs.
