About Bruce Kison
Bruce Kison broke in with the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 4, 1971, three years after the Pirates drafted the 6-foot-4 sidearmer out of Pasco, Washington, in the 14th round of the 1968 draft. That October, as a rookie, he entered Game 4 of the World Series with Pittsburgh down three runs in the first inning and threw 6⅓ scoreless innings in relief — a performance Orioles manager Earl Weaver credited with turning the Series around — as the Pirates beat Baltimore in seven games. Shoulder trouble slowed him through the early 1970s, but Kison rebuilt his delivery and became a full-time starter by 1974, the season pictured on this 1975 Topps card, then set career highs in wins (14) and ERA (3.08) in 1976. He helped Pittsburgh win a second title in 1979 before finishing his career with the Angels and Red Sox, retiring with 115 wins and 1,073 strikeouts. Known as "The Whip" for his sidearm delivery, he later coached for the Royals and Orioles. He died in 2018 at age 68.
