1975 Topps #599 Nate Colbert

About Nate Colbert
Nathan Colbert Jr. broke in with the Houston Astros in 1966 before San Diego took him in the 1968 expansion draft, and the slugging first baseman became the fledgling Padres' first true star. From 1969 to 1973 he averaged 30 home runs and 85 RBIs, made three straight All-Star teams (1971-73), and on August 1, 1972, authored one of baseball's greatest single days: five home runs and a then-record 13 RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of the Braves, tying the mark Stan Musial had set in a game an eight-year-old Colbert watched in person at Sportsman's Park. He finished eighth in NL MVP voting that year and retired as the Padres' all-time home run leader (163), a record that stood until 2024; he was inducted into the inaugural San Diego Padres Hall of Fame class in 1999. Traded to Detroit that November, Colbert appears on this 1975 Topps card as a Tiger; a 4-for-45 slump sank his average to .147, and the Tigers sold him to Montreal that June after just 45 games. He retired after 1976 having played 1,004 games over ten seasons.
