About Rod Carew

Rod Carew signed with the Twins as an amateur free agent in 1964, discovered playing semipro ball with the Bronx Cavaliers after his family emigrated from the Panama Canal Zone to Washington Heights. He debuted on April 11, 1967, and captured AL Rookie of the Year. A pure left-handed contact hitter with, in Catfish Hunter's words, "no holes" in his swing, Carew later shifted from second base to first base and made 18 consecutive All-Star teams from 1967 through 1984 — the run that puts the All-Star flag on his 1975 Topps card #600. He won seven AL batting titles, four straight from 1972 through 1975, second-most in history behind Ty Cobb; his 1975 Topps League Leaders card #306 recognizes his 1974 crown. Carew's peak came in 1977, when he hit .388 — still a Twins record — with 239 hits and the AL MVP award. He collected his 3,000th hit on August 4, 1985, with the Angels, finishing a 19-year career with 3,053 hits and a .328 average. Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1991 on the first ballot with 90.5% of the vote, Carew later had the AL batting title renamed in his honor.
