About Juan Beniquez

Juan José Beníquez Torres signed with the Red Sox out of San Sebastián, Puerto Rico, at 18 and debuted at shortstop in September 1971, backing up Luis Aparicio before shifting to center field. His 1975 Topps card, #601, catches him amid a stacked Boston outfield that also carried rookies Fred Lynn and Jim Rice; Beníquez opened that season as Boston's leadoff man before sliding into a reserve role, filling in across the outfield, at third base, and at designated hitter while hitting .291 in 78 games. He started Game Four of the 1975 World Series against Cincinnati in left field and pinch-hit to end Game Seven. Traded to Texas that November in the deal for Fergie Jenkins, he became the Rangers' regular center fielder, won a Gold Glove in 1977, and later strung together four straight .300 seasons with California and Baltimore, peaking at .336 in 1984. He retired in 1988 as the only man to have played for all eight American League franchises, a .274 hitter across 17 seasons.
