1975 Topps #602 John Vukovich

About John Vukovich
John Vukovich, a Sacramento, California native, was Philadelphia's first-round pick in the January 1966 draft out of American River College. He debuted with the Phillies in 1970, then was dealt to Milwaukee in the seven-player trade that brought Jim Lonborg to Philadelphia. Cincinnati acquired him for pitcher Pat Osburn in October 1974, and his 1975 Topps card (#602) catches him as the Reds' Opening Day third baseman; after Sparky Anderson pinch-hit for him with the bases loaded that April, an enraged Vukovich smashed lightbulbs in the clubhouse runway, was demoted to Triple-A, and was traded back to the Phillies in August, missing Cincinnati's World Series run. He returned to Philadelphia in 1979 and earned a championship ring in 1980 as the club's emergency catcher and defensive reserve. Known as "Vuk," he retired with a .161 career average, the lowest ever by a non-pitcher with 500-plus at-bats, then spent parts of three decades on the Phillies coaching staff, briefly managing the club in 1988. He died of a brain tumor in 2007 at 59.
