About Lew Krausse

Lew Krausse became one of baseball's most famous "bonus babies" when the Kansas City Athletics signed him for $125,000 hours after his 1961 graduation from Chester (Pennsylvania) High School — his father, Lew Sr., was both a former A's pitcher and the club's scout. Eight days later, the 18-year-old fired a three-hit shutout in his major-league debut against the expansion Angels, one of the most celebrated debuts of the "Silly Season" bonus era. Arm trouble and control problems then buried him in the minors for much of the next four years. Krausse resurfaced to post a career-high 14 wins for Kansas City in 1966, started the first game at the Oakland Coliseum in 1968, and threw the Milwaukee Brewers' first-ever shutout in 1970. His journeyman final stretch ran through Boston, St. Louis, and Atlanta; his 1974 season with the Braves, shown here, closed a twelve-year, 68-win big-league career.
