About Oscar Zamora
Oscar Zamora, a Cuban-born right-hander who grew up in Miami and pitched at Miami Edison High and Miami Dade Community College, signed with the Chicago Cubs and reached the majors on June 18, 1974. Card #604 in the 1975 Topps set is his recognized rookie card. As a 1974 rookie, Zamora led the Cubs with 56 relief appearances and 10 saves, working in 56 of the team's final 104 games after his call-up and posting a 3.12 ERA -- production that inspired Wrigley Field fans to sing a chant set to "That's Amore." The card's back cartoon carries a documented error, crediting him as the '73 E.R.A. leader when it should read '74. Zamora made 52 more appearances in 1975 before his effectiveness declined, and he finished his four-year career with the Houston Astros in 1978, going 13-14 with a 4.53 ERA and 23 saves. He later pitched for the Miami Amigos of the 1979 Inter-American League while running a shoe business.
