Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.
About Art Ditmar
Arthur John Ditmar was born April 3, 1929, in Winthrop, Massachusetts, and grew up in Pittsfield, spurning an athletic scholarship to Ole Miss to sign with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1947. He reached the majors in 1954 and pitched for the Athletics through their move to Kansas City before New York acquired him in a February 1957 trade for Bobby Shantz. In pinstripes Ditmar became a sinkerball specialist and a fixture of the Yankees rotation, winning 47 games over five seasons with a career-high 15 in 1960 and posting a league-best 1.030 WHIP in 1959. He won a World Series ring in 1958, and manager Casey Stengel tabbed him to start Game One of the 1960 Series against Pittsburgh — a decision second-guessed for decades after Ditmar lost that start and Game Five as the Yankees fell to the Pirates. Decades later he sued Anheuser-Busch after a Budweiser commercial mistakenly credited him, instead of Ralph Terry, as the pitcher who surrendered Bill Mazeroski's Series-ending home run. His 1960 Topps card, #430, pictures him with the Yankees and exists with white or gray back stock, a high-number Series 5 variation in which the white-back version is scarcer.
