1960 Topps #348 Barry Shetrone

About Barry Shetrone
Barry Shetrone's 1960 Topps card, #348, is his rookie issue, picturing him with the Baltimore Orioles, his hometown club — he grew up in Baltimore and starred at Southern High School before signing with the Orioles in 1956. A speedy left-handed-hitting outfielder, he tore up the Class C Arizona-Mexico League in 1957 (.371, 199 hits) and was compared by his Vancouver manager to rising star Vada Pinson. Recalled by Baltimore in July 1959, he singled off future Hall of Famer Jim Bunning in his big-league debut, but a 0-for-21 skid, two Army stints and two dislocated shoulders limited him to parts of five seasons. Traded to Washington after 1962, he played two games for the Senators in 1963 before finishing his career in the minors in 1967. He batted .205 with one home run in 60 games, all but two as an Oriole — the first Baltimore-born player to wear the modern franchise's uniform. He died in 2001 at age 63.
