About Moe Drabowsky
Right-hander Myron "Moe" Drabowsky was born in Ozanna, Poland, and fled with his family to Connecticut in 1938 ahead of Hitler's mobilization in Eastern Europe. A prep and college star at Loomis and Trinity, he signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1956 as a bonus baby and debuted that August, finishing tied for second in the National League in strikeouts as a rookie. This 1960 Topps card, from his fifth Cubs season, caught him in the twilight of a rocky Chicago run that included serving up Stan Musial's 3,000th career hit in 1958. Drabowsky found his true calling after Baltimore claimed him in the 1965 Rule 5 draft and turned him into a shutdown reliever; he struck out 11 in relief to win Game One of the 1966 World Series as the Orioles swept the Dodgers. He won a second ring with Baltimore in 1970 after a Kansas City stop where he led the AL in relief wins. A notorious clubhouse prankster famed for stashing snakes in lockers, he pitched 17 seasons for eight teams before retiring in 1972.
