About Bill Virdon
Bill Virdon signed with the Yankees out of West Plains, Missouri, for an $1,800 bonus, but with Mickey Mantle entrenched in center field, an errant throw that clipped manager Casey Stengel in spring training helped seal his trade to the St. Louis Cardinals. Virdon debuted in 1955 and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award, then was dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1956, where he played the rest of his career. Pirates broadcaster Bob Prince nicknamed him "Quail" for the softly hit balls that dropped for base hits. A sure-handed center fielder in spacious Forbes Field, Virdon won a 1962 Gold Glove and anchored the Pirates' 1960 World Series championship club shown on this card; in Game 7, a ground ball he hit took a bad hop and struck Yankees shortstop Tony Kubek in the throat, sparking the rally that ended in Bill Mazeroski's title-winning home run. He retired after the 1965 season to pursue managing, later piloting the Pirates, Yankees, Astros, and Expos, winning Manager of the Year honors twice.
