About John Tsitouris

John Tsitouris, a Monroe, North Carolina native and son of a Greek immigrant restaurant owner, signed with the Detroit Tigers in 1954 as scout Rick Ferrell's first-ever signee. After setting the South Atlantic League's single-season ERA record (1.51) with Augusta in 1956, the right-hander debuted for Detroit on June 13, 1957, working 1 2/3 relief innings in a win over Baltimore. That winter he went to the Kansas City Athletics in a 13-player trade that sent Billy Martin to Detroit -- the club shown on his high-numbered 1960 Topps card (#497). Tsitouris pitched for Kansas City from 1958-60, surviving a broken jaw off a batting-practice line drive in May 1960 before Cincinnati acquired him for Joe Nuxhall. He blossomed with the Reds, winning 12, nine and six games in 1963-65 and twice shutting out the Phillies, including a September 1964 gem that launched a ten-game Philadelphia losing streak. He finished his 11-year career 34-38 with 432 strikeouts, retiring in 1968.
