About Billy O'Dell
Billy O'Dell, a left-handed pitcher out of Clemson University, signed with the Baltimore Orioles as a bonus baby in 1954 and never spent a day in the minors. After missing 1955 to military service, he anchored the Orioles' rotation through 1959, earning back-to-back All-Star nods in 1958 and 1959; in the '58 game he retired the last nine batters he faced, including Mays, Musial, Aaron, Banks and Mazeroski, and was named MVP. Traded to San Francisco that November, O'Dell went 8-13 in his first Giants season, the year pictured on this 1960 Topps card. He blossomed into a workhorse by 1962, going a career-best 19-14 to help the Giants win the pennant, then started and lost Game 1 of that World Series to the Yankees despite striking out Mickey Mantle twice. Teammates called him "Digger," a nickname borrowed from a character on the radio-TV show The Life of Riley. He closed out his career with the Braves and Pirates, retiring after 1967 with a 105-100 record and 1,133 strikeouts.
