About Joe Ginsberg
Born Myron Nathan Ginsberg in New York City in 1926, he was called "Little Joe" after his adoptive father, and the name stuck for good. Signed by Detroit scout Wish Egan off Detroit's Cooley High School sandlots in 1944, the left-handed-hitting catcher served two years in the Army before debuting with the Tigers in 1948. He earned an Opening Day start in 1951, his best season at the plate (.260, a career-high eight homers), and on May 15, 1952, caught the first of Virgil Trucks' two no-hitters that year. Traded to Cleveland in 1953, he was later named Pacific Coast League Player of the Year with the 1955 Seattle Rainiers before rejoining the majors and, in August 1956, joining the Baltimore Orioles - the club pictured on his 1960 Topps card. He caught parts of five seasons in Baltimore, wearing glasses from 1957 on while wrestling with knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm's pitches, and closed a 13-year, seven-team career by starting behind the plate in the expansion Mets' first home game in 1962.
